Brooks' First Birthday Session and Cake Smash Smiles in Florence, SC

Brooks came into my Florence studio with those amazing blue eyes sparkling and the biggest smile on his face. This little guy was ready to celebrate his first birthday in style, complete with a hilarious cake smash that had everyone laughing.

We began Brooks' session with some classic portraits before diving into the messy fun. He looked absolutely adorable in his cream knit romper, sitting perfectly in that vintage wooden crate like he owned the place. Those blue eyes of his just popped against the neutral tones, and his natural curiosity had him reaching for everything within arm's reach. The turquoise chair became an instant hit. Brooks settled right in. We captured some sweet moments with a wooden toy car too. There's something magical about watching a one-year-old discover how wheels roll across the floor for the hundredth time with the same excitement as the first.

Then came the moment we'd all been waiting for. Brooks got settled into that wooden high chair, with a perfectly frosted white cake placed in front of him. The colorful streamers hanging behind him set the festive mood, but honestly, his expression was all the party decoration we needed. Brooks dove right in with both hands, frosting everywhere within minutes. His face lit up with pure joy as he discovered cake tastes way better than baby food. The mess was epic, the smiles were endless, and those little frosting-covered fingers made for some seriously cute close-ups.

By the end of our time together, Brooks had cake in his hair, lots of frosting between his fingers, and the most satisfied expression on his face. We were all cracking up at his enthusiastic approach to dessert, and I was busy capturing every sweet, messy moment. These are the images they'll look back on in twenty years and remember exactly how their little boy celebrated turning one!

First birthday sessions always remind me why I love photographing families here in Florence.
